About Cupping

Glass cups resting on a guest's back during a cupping session

Cupping places soft cups on the skin so that they hold on by gentle suction. The cups may rest in place or glide over the skin with a little oil. Many guests feel a pleasant pulling sensation in tight areas like the upper back and shoulders.

Round, temporary marks can appear where the cups were. They are usually painless and fade within days. Tell the therapist about blood thinners, sensitive skin or recent injuries before you start.

What happens in the session

  1. Pick the area. Usually the back, shoulders or legs.
  2. Cups on. The therapist applies them one at a time and checks how the suction feels.
  3. Rest or glide. The cups stay still or slide gently, depending on what you prefer.
  4. Cups off. A short pause before you get up.
